The complete removal of the oxidized surfaces on HDPE pipe is critical for the successful installation of all electrofusion fittings, joints, and requires that a minimum of .007″ (about the thickness of 2 sheets of paper) of surface material be completely removed from the areas in which the electrofusion fittings fusion coils will come into direct contact with the pipe surface. The use of a mechanical scraper/peeler tools that remove surface material with spring-loaded cutting heads that move over the surface of the pipe, is strongly recommended by the Plastic Pipe Institute (PPI).

Integrity Fusion Products offers two types of mechanical pipe peeler designs; Peelers that are inserted directly into the open end of the pipe to prepare pipe surfaces for the installation of electrofusion couplers, and Peelers that are designed to roll on the outside surface of the pipe that will remove material from the entire circumference of the pipe., used for installing electrofusion couplers and electrofusion side-wall fittings.
